Expat pandas on a China-long journey

Here’s one for you animal lovers. According to China Daily, a pair of pandas from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding left China Sunday morning to Paris, where they would arrive after an 11 hour long flight. The pair is called Yuan Zai and Huan Huan.

Zai, male, likes climbing trees, playing with balls and catching butterflies. While Huan, female, likes sitting quietly and feasting on her favourite food all day, according to the article.

The pandas will take part in a research program in France, and will be on loan to the country for a decade. According to the founder of the Paris zoo, they’ve collected 20 types of bamboo from all over Europe to accommodate the two. At 3 am Sunday the pandas started their journey on a flight called “FedEx Panda Express”.

Flight meals consisted of bamboo shots, apples and buns – not your ordinary flight meals of rice and curry there.

A total of 36 Chinese pandas are now expats overseas.
