Knit On

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is currently showing an exhibition entitled “Knit On – The Contemporary Knitwear Fashion Exhibition” which showcases seamless 3-D knitwear by designer Dr Judyanna Ng. She’s a senior lecturer at the university, and is especially known for portraying the relationship between fashion and social/cultural context in her knitwear design.

The presentation of the exhibition goes like this: “The four knitwear collections stem from her background of designer and artist, together with her experience and knowledge in the use of craftmanship and advanced technology. Her collections embody the essence of oriental style together with a contemporary and international direction.”

The collection was showcased during The Hong Kong Fashion Week back in January, which I covered. It’s also been showcased in New York at the SpinExpo New York in 2009 and 2010.

It is divided into three themes: “In the mood for love”, “Cinese Magileria” and “Emotive”. I especially liked “In the mood for love” – where the theme is based on the designer’s personal feeling of the 80s fashion. The clothes are knitted on the latest technology; Shima Seiki’s Computerized Flat Knitting Machine SWG-X. If the collection is inspired by Wong Kar-Wai’s movie with the same name I have no idea, but they did have a bit of the same romantic feel to them….
